The Bad Liars kicked off the Blues weekend in the Ferry Inn to big applause with a lively set of some of my favourite covers.

During blues-wailing dentist Lorraine McBrearty’s best moments you could detect the influence of Bessie Smith.

Nobody Knows You and Summertime were excellently performed while Out of Time had to be my top tune of the set. T’ain’t Nobody’s Bizness and Cry Me Like a River were haunting examples of the slower numbers.

The band has come a long way since last year’s Blues weekend when they first took to the stage at the Open Mic session. Since then two more members have been recruited.

Mike ‘Noodles’ Henderson on lead guitar, Andrew Want on guitar and harmonica, Dan Rhodes on double bass and drummer Dave Stevenson have a good sound and repertoire going to please the crowd who whistled for more.

They were also one of the last local bands to play at the weekend with a set at the Royal Hotel.
